Invest in Water as the New GOLD

New Mexico can turn geothermal into lower costs, new revenue, and long-term water resilience.

Geothermal capture

We can harness heat beneath our feet to power homes, lower electric bills, and build a more secure water future.

New Mexico has approximately 300 square miles of surface water. In contrast, New Mexico sits atop a vast and rich reservoir of hot water and steam under the surface.

The reason? We sit on top of the Rio Grande Rift, where the earth’s crust is being stretched, allowing heat from the mantel to rise closer to the surface. In some parts of the state, just below the surface, rock temperature exceeds 350 degrees, offering potential as a source of electricity and heating uses.

The geo-thermal uses are vast. If properly harnessed, they could provide heat to thousands of homes, electric generating plants, greenhouses, and industrial facilities. Technology already exists that could make it part of our all-of-the-above energy policy, keep our electricity rates down and provide new sources of revenue as we export our surplus energy to other states.

In time, as technology improves, it may also become a new source of drinking and irrigation water for our farmers.
